Carlos Redman is a songwriter/multi-instrumentalist who is the young protégé of Donald Byrd and Betty Carter. Best known for his fearless trumpeting, on stage he continues to impress audiences in Europe and the U.S. with his show of heart stopping songs and jaw-dropping horn playing.
A Detroit native, Carlos Redman has grown into one of the most prolific experimental trumpeters of our generation. Blending a sultry combination of Hip-hop, R&B, Rock, and Classical in Jazz genres, the young horn player continues to defy boundaries as he is often drawn in comparison to many great trumpet players.
Moving to New York in 2010, the American musician currently leads an eponymous modern jazz ensemble, and a soul quintet entitled Chemistry. He often cites "Detroit Soul" as inspiration for his compositions and experimentation, noting it's contemporary sound was a large influence.
Traveling and encountering people from all over the world as a composer has grown him a reputation as a capable artist that fervently loves writing music that not only speaks for people in the mainstream, but is also strongly rooted in that unique Motor City sound.
An edgy combination of raw trumpet mastery and consciousness, Not Your Classic or N.Y.C. is beacon of light for contemporary improvised music. Featuring a fusion of finger popping dance tunes, rock, and uptempo Mid-West techno influences, inspirations such as DJ's Carl Craig, Juan Atkins, and Derrick Mays, and Hip-Hop guru J-Dilla have all made their mark on the young horn player.
The compilation album by the trumpeter has premiered to critical acclaim. Mostly original works with great interpretations of the Eddie Harris definitive "Cold Duck Time" and the electronically tinged original, "Love Letters," elevates Redman to the height of Detroit instrumental royalty. Hurricane like, yet stirringly magical, this seasoned performing artist embraces the art of creatively mixing old school Jazz with modern flavor, bringing back reminiscent sounds with a hip new twist.
